Best Places to Eat in Gunsan

FOOD
My favorite part of life!

When you move to a new country, one of the first things people ask is about the food.
We travel all over the Peninsula, so some of these may be slightly outside the city. But for the most part, below are the best places to eat in Gunsan, Republic of Korea!

Sweet India

This wonderful restaurant has delicious curry- lamb, beef, and veggie- and naan of varying flavors. You can get plain naan, or naan brushed with honey or garlic sauce. This photo is three types of curry, but you can get a single large bowl of your favorite flavor.

Beer Garden (near Eunpa Lake)

The Earth Beer Garden (I think) is on the edge of Eunpa Lake. The menu is hard to translate, but the Shrimp Pilaf is to die for. The pizza is a tad spicy, but still yummy!

Cafe Liz
Cafe Liz is one of my favorite places. Not a ton of variety in foodstuff, but their coffee is the best I've had while here. The outside looks like worn-down industrial brickwork, but the inside smells of sawdust and sweets.

Here Burger
Near the center of downtown, Here Burger is the closest we've come to finding a hearty. American-style burger. Korean burgers tend to be smaller, high & narrow, and faintly sweet. But this burger was thick and hearty!

Rest Stops
Interestingly enough, Korean rest stops have some of the best foods!
Rottibun is a coffee stand and has normal and vanilla-flavored pastries. Its large, warm, and delicious for only 1,300 Won (about a dollar).

The larger rest stops have a cafeteria set up, with some of the best rice and ramen I've had!

Outside, food stands of varying brand and quality can cook something up for you. Fish sticks, fish patties, sausage dogs, coffee, rice patties, etc...you never really know what you're going to get.

Kunsan AB Bowling Alley
Funny enough, I realllyyy love the Bimpimbap from the bowling alley...fresh veggies, marinated beef, and rice. Hits the spot!

Cafe Tiamo
Also known as Crack Waffle, this is a cute coffee shop downtown that serves coffee, ice cream, and waffles with fruit affectoinally called Crack Waffles. We havn't tried that particular dish yet, but we will soon!

Dover to Korea

As you do in the military, it's time to say goodbye to one home and make a life in another place! For us, that means moving from Dover, Delaware to South Korea. We packed up the house, loaded up the car, and headed across the country with Ranger in the back seat. A seven day road trip lay ahead of us to get to Los Angeles to leave Ranger with my family while Evan and I live in South Korea for the next year.

Our trip included stops in Charleston, Georgia, Texas, and Arizona, all to see friends, family, and cool places. And of course give Ranger pee breaks!

We stopped in Georgia to see a good friend from college. Ranger didn't know what to do with her pet cat...

Ranger loves watching were we're going...he always needed a view out the front window!
Evan's family lives in Texas, with a lake in their back yard with some pretty giant fish for the catching!

After seeing our families on our epic road trip, we flew to Seattle to spend a day before catching the 14-hour plane to Korea.

After exploring Pikes Place, we hopped on a ferris wheel to catch some gorgeous views of the city and bay!

The photos dont do the mountains justice. Absolutely gorgeous!

After over 24 hours of traveling, seeing Seoul become closer to our airplane was a beautiful and welcome sight...and the beginning of a year of adventure!

Combat Dining In 2017

Combat Dining In is often a once-in-a-career event. With budget constraints, low manning, high mission tempo, and overall stress that we feel in the military, it takes a lot to plan an event like this.
Luckily, we had a group of stellar NCOs who knew the importance of high morale. So they put together a Dining In with obstacle courses, great food, cheap beer, and water fights every few minutes!

Because there were water balloons flying, squirt guns bursting, and buckets dumping, there was no way I'd have my phone out of it's plastic bag more than a few seconds. But we were able to capture some fun times before and after!

My Senior NCOs (senior Enlisted) loved dumping water on their Flight Commander (me).

Women in Defense Conference

A coworker of mine and I had the opportunity to attend a Women in Defense Conference in Washington, D.C. in September. We heard from a range of speakers, many former military and now successful civilians. Both of us were able to ask a key female leader a question...I spoke with General Lori Robinson, the first female COCOM commnader (she leads NORAD and USNORTHCOM), and my coworker was able to speak with the Honorable Heather Wilson, the Secretary of the Air Force!

Both were terrifying, we were shaking from nerves after. So after the conference, we went to Georgetown Cupcakes and stuffed our faces :)
